Tile estimation that survives reality
Divide the area by the coverage of one tile (including its grout gap) and add waste: 10% is standard for straight layouts, 15%+ for diagonal patterns, large-format tiles or rooms with many cuts. Cut tiles can rarely be reused on the opposite wall, which is what consumes the allowance.
Keep a few spare tiles after the job โ future repairs are nearly impossible to color-match from a new batch.
Frequently Asked Questions
โธHow much extra tile should I buy?
10% over the geometric requirement for straight lays, 15% or more for diagonal/herringbone patterns or rooms with many corners and obstacles.
โธDoes grout gap really change the count?
Slightly โ a 3 mm gap on 60 cm tiles adds about 1% coverage per tile. On small mosaic tiles the effect is much larger.
