How SIP returns are calculated
A SIP invests a fixed amount every month, so each installment compounds for a different length of time. The maturity value uses the future value of an annuity-due formula: FV = A ร ((1+i)^n โ 1) / i ร (1+i), where A is the monthly amount, i the monthly return and n the number of installments.
SIPs also benefit from rupee-cost averaging: you automatically buy more units when prices are low and fewer when prices are high, smoothing out market volatility over long periods.
Choosing a realistic return rate
Equity mutual funds have historically delivered 10โ14% annualized over long periods in growing markets, but returns are never guaranteed. Test conservative (8โ10%) and optimistic (12โ14%) scenarios to understand the range of outcomes.
The biggest lever is time. Doubling the investment period far more than doubles the maturity value because the earliest installments compound the longest.
Frequently Asked Questions
โธIs SIP better than a lump sum investment?
SIPs reduce timing risk by spreading purchases across market conditions, which suits salaried investors. A lump sum can earn more if markets rise steadily, but carries more timing risk.
โธAre SIP returns guaranteed?
No. The calculator projects an assumed annual return. Actual mutual fund returns vary with market performance.
โธCan I increase my SIP amount later?
Yes, most platforms support step-up SIPs. Increasing your SIP by even 10% per year significantly raises the final corpus.
