Using pace to plan races
Pace is simply finish time divided by distance, expressed as minutes per kilometre or mile. Knowing your goal pace turns a finish-time target into something you can actually run to: a 50-minute 10K is 5:00 per km, so if you cross 5K above 25 minutes you know to pick it up.
Most coaches recommend training across several paces — easy runs well below race pace to build endurance, and shorter intervals above it to build speed. Race day itself usually rewards starting a touch slower than goal pace and finishing faster.
Frequently Asked Questions
▸How do I calculate running pace?
Divide your total time by the distance. For pace per km, convert your time to seconds, divide by kilometres, then express as minutes:seconds — exactly what this calculator does.
▸What's a good 5K pace?
It varies hugely by fitness and age. Many recreational runners finish a 5K around 6:00–7:00 per km; competitive club runners are well under 4:00 per km.
