Adding vs. removing GST
Adding GST is simple multiplication: gross = net ร (1 + rate/100). Removing GST from an inclusive price is where people slip up โ you divide, not subtract the percentage: net = gross รท (1 + rate/100). From โน1,180 at 18%, the net is 1180 รท 1.18 = โน1,000, not 1180 โ 18%.
In India, intra-state sales split GST equally into CGST (central) and SGST (state) โ a 18% rate becomes 9% + 9% โ while inter-state sales charge the full rate as IGST.
Frequently Asked Questions
โธHow do I remove GST from a total?
Divide the gross amount by (1 + rate/100). For 18% GST: divide by 1.18. The GST portion is the gross minus that result.
โธWhat are CGST, SGST and IGST?
For sales within an Indian state, GST splits equally into central (CGST) and state (SGST) halves. Inter-state sales charge the whole amount as integrated GST (IGST).
