Exponent rules worth memorizing
Product rule: xᵃ × xᵇ = xᵃ⁺ᵇ. Quotient rule: xᵃ ÷ xᵇ = xᵃ⁻ᵇ. Power rule: (xᵃ)ᵇ = xᵃᵇ. A negative exponent flips to a reciprocal (x⁻ⁿ = 1/xⁿ) and a fractional exponent is a root (x^(1/2) = √x).
Anything (except 0) to the power 0 equals 1 — a consequence of the quotient rule, since xⁿ ÷ xⁿ = x⁰ = 1.
Frequently Asked Questions
▸What does a negative exponent mean?
Take the reciprocal: 2⁻³ = 1/2³ = 1/8 = 0.125.
▸What does a fractional exponent mean?
A root: x^(1/2) is the square root, x^(1/3) the cube root, and x^(2/3) is the cube root of x squared.
