How to calculate a discount
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100 โ that's the amount saved. Subtract it from the original price for the sale price. A quick mental trick: 10% is just the price with the decimal moved one place left; build other percentages from there (25% = 10% + 10% + half of 10%).
For stacked discounts (e.g. 20% off, then an extra 10% off), apply them one after another, not added together: the result is 28% off, not 30%.
Frequently Asked Questions
โธHow do I calculate 20% off?
Multiply the price by 0.20 to get the savings, then subtract. For a $50 item: $50 ร 0.20 = $10 off, so you pay $40.
โธDo stacked discounts add up?
No. A 20% discount followed by 10% off equals 28% total, because the second discount applies to the already-reduced price.
