When the mean is (and isn't) the right average
The arithmetic mean — sum divided by count — is the most common average, ideal for symmetric data like test scores or temperatures. But it is sensitive to outliers: one billionaire in a room dramatically raises the room's 'average' wealth.
For skewed data such as incomes or house prices, the median (middle value) usually represents 'typical' better. Our Statistics Calculator computes mean, median and mode together so you can compare.
Frequently Asked Questions
▸How do I calculate an average?
Add all the numbers together and divide by how many numbers there are. The average of 4, 8 and 9 is (4+8+9) ÷ 3 = 7.
▸What's the difference between mean and median?
The mean is the sum divided by the count; the median is the middle value when sorted. The median resists outliers, the mean uses every value's magnitude.
