Working with time arithmetic
Time math is base-60: convert everything to minutes, do ordinary arithmetic, then convert back (divide by 60; the remainder is minutes). Payroll systems usually want decimal hours — 7h 45m is 7.75 hours, because 45/60 = 0.75.
Common decimal equivalents worth memorizing for timesheets: 15 min = 0.25, 20 min = 0.33, 30 min = 0.5, 45 min = 0.75.
Frequently Asked Questions
▸How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide by 60. 50 minutes = 50 ÷ 60 = 0.83 hours.
▸Why does my timesheet use decimal hours?
Payroll multiplies hours × rate, which needs a single decimal number rather than hours-and-minutes notation.
