The math behind 'what do I need on the final?'
Your overall grade is a weighted average: overall = current × (1 − w) + final × w, where w is the final's weight as a decimal. Solving for the final score gives: needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w.
Example: an 78% current grade, a final worth 30%, and an 85% target → needed = (85 − 78×0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 101.3%. That target is out of reach without extra credit — better to know now and set realistic goals.
Frequently Asked Questions
▸What if the required score is above 100%?
Your target isn't achievable through the final alone. Ask about extra credit, or compute the best grade you can reach by entering 100 as a test.
▸How do I find my current grade?
Most learning platforms show a running weighted grade. Otherwise, average your scores per category, multiply each by its syllabus weight (excluding the final), and rescale to 100%.
